Greywater is a type of wastewater that does not include toilet water. Greywater is considered to be high volume low strength wastewater that has high reuse and application potential. The composition varies depending on lifestyle, fittings and climate. Greywater reuse has been around for a long time and is still going on in water stressed areas. If given the right attention, greywater reuse can help reduce over-consumption of freshwater resources and pollution caused by untreated greywater being discharged into freshwater sources. Greywater reuse can also be used as an additional source of water in acute water crisis areas and in arid climate regions. Greywater that has been recycled can be used in a variety of water-consuming activities such as toilet flush and agriculture. One of the main challenges of greywater reuse has been public health perception and the lack of appropriate technology for reuse.
Key Resource Centre-Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) has organized a series of Level-2 Training programs under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Government of India spanning various regions of India. These initiatives are designed to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in “Grey Water Management: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recharge for Enhancing Water Use Efficiency.” The training also integrates Circular Economy and Net Zero concepts, alongside Nature-based Solutions and Technologies for Grey Water Management. This approach aligns seamlessly with Circular Economy principles, where wastewater is viewed as a valuable resource. By adopting net-zero concepts, the training encourages participants to balance water consumption and regeneration, creating a sustainable ecosystem. The training incorporates key principles advocated for successful water management.
The KRC-HIHT’s Level-2 Training programs have been organized in the leadership of Mr. H.P. Uniyal, Advisor, Swami Rama Himalayan University and Mr. Nitesh Kaushik, Deputy Director, RDI. This year the organization has organized level-2 trainings on greywater management in Daman & Diu of Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Kochi in Kerala and Panji in Goa in which more than 200 participants were trained. These trainings played a crucial role in creating a network of water warriors across India. The workshops showcased the institute’s continued effort to empower communities with the knowledge and tools for effective grey water management, charting a course towards a greener and eco-friendly future. With dedicated efforts like these, the vision of communities thriving on a foundation of water security and environmental consciousness becomes more achievable.
The Level-2 Training Program in Goa was also graced by Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, Vice Chancellor of Swami Rama Himalayan University. He appreciated the efforts of the WATSAN team to disseminate the knowledge and skills on various aspects of water and sanitation management issues across the country. He also expressed his gratitude to the participants for their active participation in the training process.
