Relief for Victims of Uttarakhand Floods—An Appeal
On June 16, 2013, a devastating cloudburst in the region of the Himalayan shrine Kedarnath, released a flood of devastation in its wake. It was an unprecedented disaster for the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, destroying countless lives and villages in its path. As reported in the media, over 100,000 people were stranded; approximately 70,000 have been evacuated and 30,000 are still waiting for relief. The Indian Army, Air Force, Indian Tibetan Boarder Force and National Disaster Response Force have coordinated its resources to rescue and deliver as many stranded pilgrims as possible.
For those people that arrive at Jolly Grant airport, the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) is making every effort to aid them and provide relief. As the days advance, the severity of the situation is going from bad to worse. Himalayan Hospital teams are putting forth their best relief efforts for the patients as they arrive at the airport, many in critical condition. Many had not eaten for days and had to walk long distances to reach the helicopter relief stations. The entire Hospital machinery is working untiringly to cater to the needs of the disaster patients. The latest count of the patients admitted at the Himalayan Hospital is 270, out of which 120 patients have been discharged after gaining recovery.
All patients are being treated free of cost including medicine, investigation, surgery and food. This cost is being born by HIHT. We are proud of our doctors, nursing and other supporting staff and students who are working as volunteers. Their eagerness to help is heartwarming.
